Dominican Republic Geography

The Dominican Republic, as well as Haiti, is considered to be a part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. DR occupies over two-thirds of the island. The country is bordered by Haiti to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the south, and the North Atlantic Ocean to the north. The largest of the Dominican Republic's mountain ranges is the Cordillera Central on the boarder with Haiti. The peak of Pico Duarte represents the highest point of the country. It should be mentioned that nearly 10% of country’s territory is protected as national parks and science reserves. Santo Domingo is the capital, the largest and most densely populated city.
